DER DRITTE RAUM. Exhibition at Kunstverein Nürnberg, 23 June – 20 August 2023

Kunstverein Nürnberg – Albrecht Dürer Gesellschaft, exhibition opening 22 June 2023

Michaela Melián’s solo exhibition “Der dritte Raum” (The Third Space) deals with her remembrance-political and research-based works on the topic of National Socialism, which have been created over the past twenty years – from the multimedia installation “Föhrenwald” (2005) to the settlement in which Nazi forced laborers were housed over the course of two decades: innen, Jewish “displaced persons” and German expellees were housed, to the site-specific installation “Maria Luiko, Trauernde, 1938″ (2022), which is currently on display in the Old Botanical Garden in Munich and temporarily superimposes the monumental Neptune Fountain by the ‘gottbegnadeten’ sculptor Joseph Wackerle with enlargements of the work of the same name by the Jewish Munich artist, who was deported and murdered in 1941.

Many of the works – including some unrealized projects, such as for the commentary on a memorial to the fallen in Wurzen or for the concentration camp memorial in Ravensbrück – which are presented in “Der dritte Raum” in the form of drafts, models, sketches, versions and documentations, were conceived for public spaces. The thematic exhibition at the Kunstverein Nürnberg also includes a currently planned project by Michaela Melián, which is dedicated to the artist Gustav Metzger, who was born in Nuremberg in 1926 and emigrated to England on the Kindertransport in 1939.
